Background
The Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP) of the World Bank is supporting a multi-year project designed to strengthen the productive capacity and management of Soroti Sweetpotato Producers and Processors Association (SOSPPA). SOSPPA works with farmers and farmer groups to produce sweetpotato seeds and roots for sale. It has also been undertaking small-scale processing and value addition activities. The project will upgrade these activities and build SOSSPA’s governance capacity.
The specific objectives of the project are to: (a) Improve market access and farm incomes for SOSPPA farmers through OFSP marketing, processing, and value addition; (b) Increase productivity and production of sweetpotato roots and vines, and other nutritious crops, amongst SOSPPA farmers; (c) Promote diversified utilization and consumption of OFSP products amongst SOSPPA members and in current and new markets; and (d) Strengthen SOSPPA’s governance and management capacities to deliver services to its members.
In line with its objectives, the project focuses on linking farmers markets for fresh and processed products, improving use of good agronomic and regenerative practices, adding value/processing and nutrition, and efficient governance of producer organizations to deliver on the social and commercial responsibilities. To support the implementation of project activities, SOSPPA seeks to hire an Accounts Assistant. The Accounts Assistant will, among other tasks, assist with processing and reconciling accounting documents such as invoices, billings, employee reimbursements, cash receipts, vendor statements, and journal vouchers, prepare payments and issue salary pay slips, and monitor and track the revolving fund for SOSPPA groups.
Location and tenure:
This position will be based at SOSPPA’s office in Kyere Town Council, Serere district, Teso region. It will be for two years, renewable based on performance and availability of funds.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field. CPA level one will be an added advantage.
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in a similar position, preferably in a producer organization.
- Knowledge of work in the field, particularly producer organizations.
- Working knowledge in local tax regulations.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Good communication, interpersonal and reporting skills.
- Ability to work independently and to take initiative when sorting out problem issues.
- Fluency in English
- Knowledge in local languages (Ateso, Kuman, etc) is an added advantage
